2023 Charity Partner: Shelter – Housing and Homelessness Charity
Kang & Co Solicitors are delighted to announce that Shelter will be our charity partner for 2023. This year, we are very excited to be working alongside this charity, who exist to defend the right for people to have a safe home.
About Shelter
Shelter is a registered charity that campaigns for tenant rights in Great Britain. It gives advice, information and advocacy to people and lobbies government and local authorities for new laws and policies. It works in partnership with Shelter Cymru in Wales and the Housing Rights Service in Northern Ireland.
Shelter offer advice and support services on a one-to-one personal basis to help with housing issues and homeless. They have a free emergency helpline which is open all year round, to answer calls from anyone who is struggling with a housing issue or homelessness. They also have an in-house team of solicitors who provide free legal advice and attend Court to help people who have lost their homes or are facing eviction from their homes.
Director Manjinder Kang was pleased to announce Kang & Co Solicitors’s 2023 charity partner as Shelter and stated:
It is a privilege to have Shelter as our fundraising charity partner for this year. In a time where the basic need of a safe roof above ones head seems to be harder to come by, Shelter’s work is extremely vital. Shelter have helped millions of people locally and nationally with housing issues and homelessness for over 50 years. The right to a safe home is a key principle for Shelter that we can certainly get behind.
Regional Community Fundraiser (Birmingham) Fiona Conn of Shelter commented on the partnership and describes the important services and support that Shelter provide:
Shelter exists to defend the right to a safe home, and to fight the devastating impact the housing emergency has on people and society. We help families and individuals who are facing homelessness, where people are often forced to stay in unsuitable, overcrowded and unsafe hostels and B&Bs.
Birmingham is the UKs second city, and the second worst city in England for homelessness. In January 2023, the city declared a Housing Emergency, with 19500 people on the housing register and 4400 people stuck in temporary accommodation.
By Kang and Co choosing us as their Charity of the Year, they will be supporting those facing homelessness locally, via the services we offer. Our services are designed to advise, guide and support people with all types of housing needs – whether it takes a short conversation or intensive support over several months. In the past few years our hub has supported people across the city through advice, support, legal cover and practical assistance, and we can only continue to do this with the support of fantastic organisations like this.
We are so thrilled to be working with Kang and Co Solicitors as their charity partner of the year, and can’t wait to support them on the fundraising events and volunteering they will be partaking in. Shelter regularly has fundraising / volunteering events and campaigns throughout the year with sport not being the only option to raise funds for the charity. There are plenty of activities that anyone can join in order to help fight for housing equality.
